Studies on the Uesugi family・上杉氏の研究
Welcome to www.uesugi.dk, the purpose of which is to make freely available, to anyone
interested, my writings on the Japanese warrior family, the Uesugi. Available for download
are my dissertation, Uesugi Kenshin: a study of the military career of a sixteenth century
warlord, and the first of a projected series of essays collectively entitled The Uesugi: a study
of a Japanese warrior family’s political and military involvement in eastern Japan, 1252-1455.
Uesugi Kenshin: a study of the military career of a sixteenth century warlord
The dissertation earned me a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2001, but it remained
unpublished until uploaded to this website in August 2009. Since then it has also been made available at
Humanities Commons, the scholarly website created by the Modern Language Association and various partner
societies. Absent from the original, but added to the one available here, is a page of acknowledgements, but
no alterations to the text have been made; that is, the misspellings, typos and grammatical errors that were
overlooked during the proofreading have not been corrected.
